Lenore Reilly Carlisle

Assistant Professor of Psychology and Education

Specialization
Elementary/early childhood education and teacher preparation

Lenore Reilly Carlisle's research interests range from elementary and early childhood education to the preparation of teachers for urban areas through professional collaborative programs and children's literature. She is the coeditor of Beyond Words: Picture Books for Older Readers and Writers and with Masha Rudman has coauthored a forthcoming book Children's Literature: An Issues Approach.

Currently, Reilly Carlisle is working on several research projects, supported by the Massachusetts Coalition for Improving Teacher Quality and Student Achievement in Urban Schools, that examine the role of arts and sciences faculty in teacher preparation efforts and the policies that support or inhibit collaboration among such faculty. She has recently developed a faculty seminar with colleague Sandy Lawrence to explore the development of an educational studies program from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Reilly Carlisle teaches a range of courses, from a first-year seminar on Schools, Schooling, and Society: The Politics of Literacy to an intermediate-level course on the Differences in Learning and senior seminars on Developing Literacy in the Early Childhood/Elementary Classroom and Developing Math/Science/Technology Instruction and Curriculum. She also offers courses that allow students to gain experience in early childhood and elementary schools by observing, assisting, and student teaching in local elementary school classrooms.

In addition to teaching, Reilly Carlisle was previously a language arts teacher, principal/director of Mark's Meadow Laboratory School, codirector of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst's Constructivist Teacher Education Program, and director of teacher education for UMass Amherst's School of Education.
