Eri Fahy '07
I realized I subscribed to a deep western philosophy that emphasizes an attachment to quick progress in my work. I had to reevaluate how fast things could actually change. In the end, I learned that change can take as much time as it needs. |

Deepikaa Menon '07 Chennai, India
Although I didn't go abroad during the school year the way many of my friends did, I still experienced a similar transformation I had seen in them while I was in Germany over the summer; I realized that trying new things and new places was mainly about constantly seeing beyond yourself. |

While I have ruled out journalism as a career, the invaluable understanding of events in the region I gained during my internship will continue to be a great asset as I continue to pursue the study of international relations. |

Cynthia Rohrer, 09 Hong Kong, China
A Hong Kong native who is familiar with Chinese culture, I became aware of the subtle differences between citizens of Hong Kong and neighboring Shenzhen. I was initially bothered by the attention I received in Shenzhen because of my foreign appearance, but gradually I learned to overcome my discomfort and instead appreciate the extensive cultural exposure. |

Erika Power 07 Fair Haven, NJ
Helping the people was very fulfilling and worthwhile. There was so much more we could have done, but we were limited in our ability to accomplish our goals by factors like bureaucracy (there was a nurse's strike for two weeks). However, I did keep a positive attitude and did not get overwhelmed. By the end of the internship, I got very good at prescribing glasses and even learnt a few words in one of the local dialect. |

Maureen Yang 07 Northbrook, IL
Staying in the US would never have given me a genuine picture of what life is really like for the millions with AIDS in Africa. It was an eye opening experience to be in a completely different culture. |

The internship has changed me in many different ways, especially with my Chinese having improved tremendously because of the time I spent in China, I was able to skip a year of Chinese on my return to Mount Holyoke and move to the next level! |

Mufaro Kanyangarara 07 Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe
Through this internship I have come to understand how South Africa's political history has impacted the spread of HIV/AIDS. This internship solidified my interest in HIV/AIDS research. |

Monica Goforth 07 Sydney, Australia
I learned to live and work independently. I learned a lot about the culture and history of the area, and Ethiopian politics. I learned a lot about the difficulties NGOs face when working on development projects - from the side of funding, government controls/requirements, and the community's interest or involvement in making the projects successful. |

Emma Kwaa 08 Accra, Ghana
The conference was for 60 participants from all over the world. It was a great international experience because I had the chance to interact with them. The CGI internship was the best international experience I could have had within that short period of time. |
