Reconfiguring LITS Space

For the last few summers LITS has been reconfiguring spaces in the complex to match functions and space with shifting patron usage. The first phase was in the summer of 2003 when the Information Commons was created on the 4th floor of the Miles-Smith building.

It continued last summer when the library reference desk was reconfigured making it smaller and less of a barrier between staff and patron. At the same time small student group study rooms were created at the back of Williston stacks on Levels 2, 3 and 5. This summer begins Phase 2 of this project.

Reconfiguring the Dwight Corridor
The Dwight Corridor phase will concentrate on multi-media production and usage.  The new design includes a 16 seat multi-media hands-on teaching space; a LITS staffed Digitization Center; 2 small group study rooms; and a faculty work area. The layout will be flexible with room dividers (a combination of glass and fabric panels) and a mix of tables and soft seating with tablet arms.   The entire area will have wireless internet access. Extra electrical and network outlets will also be sprinkled throughout the space.  The redesigned corridor will have a high tech look with exposed mechanicals at the ceiling level.  The removal of the existing glass walls will give the area an open and accessible feel.

The construction work begins on May 29, 2007 and will be completed before school starts in the Fall 2007.  The connector between Dwight and Miles-Smith will be closed during the renovation.

LITS looks forward to serving the Mount Holyoke Community in this exciting new space.
