Important Scope Note: The following sources provide merely an introduction to research in Asian Studies. They are not intended to be comprehensive but rather a starting point. Because Asian Studies usually involves interdisciplinary research, it also will be useful to consult additional subject guides, such as "International Affairs," "Politics," "Economics" or "History."

Britannica Online
An enhanced version of the Encyclopedia Britannica, including Britannica Online and Book of the Year articles, the Index to Britannica Online, and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition.  Its content includes long and short articles from two encyclopedias, media database, magazine articles, the Web's best sites, and videos.

Online Index Databases
Library of Congress Asian Collections [electronic resource]: an illustrated guide, 2000.

Academic Search Premier (EBSCO)
Provides multi-disciplinary coverage from the mid 70s to present, containing full text for nearly 4,500 journals, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed titles. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,144 journals in the collection.

Expanded Academic ASAP (Thomson Gale)
Provides more than 3,500 indexed and full-text titles of journals and magazines across disciplines, including 2,100 peer-reviewed titles, since 1980s; and covers a wide-range of topics including social sciences, humanities, education, science and technology.

Ethnic News Watch (ProQuest)
Designed to be an interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. ENW titles offer additional viewpoints from those proffered by the mainstream press. Coverage begins in 1990.

EconLit (EBSCO)
Produced by the American Economic Association, this database contains bibliographic references and some abstracts for journal articles, books, articles in collective volumes and dissertations. It provides links to full text articles in all fields of economics, including capital markets, country studies, econometrics, economic forecasting, environmental economics, government regulations, labor economics, monetary theory, urban economics and much more. It also contains the bibliographic database Abstracts of Working Papers in Economics, produced by Cambridge University Press. Journal article coverage begins in 1969 and working papers in 1984.

Historical Abstracts (ABC-CLIO)
Provides an extensive bibliography of journal articles, book reviews, and dissertations on world history from medieval to modern, (excluding the United States and Canada) from 1450 to the present; and covers over 1,700 journals published worldwide in over forty languages. Many of the articles and dissertations and masters' theses are full-text. Coverage begins in 1954.

MLA International Bibliography (1963-present)
The Modern Languages Association International Bibliography indexes critical scholarship worldwide on literature, languages, linguistics and folklore. Provides approximately 1,200,000 records to over 3,500 international publications including journals, books, series, dissertations, bibliographies, working papers, proceedings, and other materials. Updated ten times a year. The index is available in paper format from 1921-1962 in the Main Reference Room, call number: PN 1 M64 REF.

PAIS International (OCLC First Search)
Provides international coverage of materials in government, international relations, legislation, political science, statistics, and related areas, including materials in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish with English language abstracts and subject headings and also contains links to web resources and publisher websites. 1972-present.

Web of Science Databases (Thomson Scientific)
Mount Holyoke College subscribes to the Web of Science, which includes these three databases:

  • Science Citation Index, 1945-present.
    Fully indexes 5,900 major journals across 150 scientific disciplines, including all cited references captured from indexed articles
  • Social Sciences Citation Index, 1956-present
    Fully indexes more than 1,725 journals across 50 social sciences disciplines, and it indexes individually selected, relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals.
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index, 1975-present.
    Fully covers 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, and it indexes individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.

Sociological Abstracts (ProQuest CSA)
Abstracts and indexes an international selection of sociological journals, serials, conference papers, books, and dissertations in the field of sociology, social work and other social sciences. Coverage begins with 1963.

Lexis Nexis Academic(LexisNexis)
LexisNexis provides the full text of the following resources:

  • News providing the full text of 350 domestic and foreign newspapers and magazine articles in a variety of languages, and TV and radio news transcripts.
  • Legal Information including federal and state court decisions, laws, codes, regulations, patents, and opinions.
  • Company, Business and Economic Information including industry and market news, company profiles and financial information, and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reports.

World News Connection (Thomson Dialog)
World News Connection (WNC) is a foreign news service provided by the U.S. government, which offers translations of foreign news items from radio and television broadcasts, news agencies, newspapers, books and scientific, technical and government reports.

WWW Virtual Library: Asian Studies
This is the famous site for East Asian Studies scholars, maintained by experts around the world, and located at Australia National University.

Net Resources SARAI: South Asia Resource Access on the Internet
This comprehensive site, part of the Asian Studies World Wide Web Virtual Library, is edited and maintained by Dr. David Magier, Columbia University Libraries. It includes links to South Asia regional resources as well as many individual country listings.

East and Southeast Asia: Net Resources
Maintained by Robert Y. Eng of University of Redlands, the site provides an annotated list of Internet resources on East and South East Asian regions with particular emphasis on political, cultural, and historical aspects.

East Asian Libraries Cooperative World Wide Web
This project was sponsored by Ohio State University, the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, the U.S. Department of Education, and Sun Microsystems. It supports research on East Asian studies through the collaboration and development of unique electronic collections by librarians, scholars, and researchers in the field.

Library of Congress/Country Studies/Area Handbook Series
The Country Studies Series presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. Studies included here were published between 1988 and 1998.

The Five College Center for East Asian Studies
Online Resources to Support K-12 and college level East Asian Studies in the Northeast. A nice place to begin exploring Asian Studies on the Web.

Sawnet (South Asian Women's NETwork)
Many annotated links and some articles on subjects of interest to women from South Asia. Includes a mailing list for women only.

Japanese public domain texts.

Marjorie Chan's ChinaLinks
This is a wonderful site for people interested in Chinese Studies, particularly Chinese Language and Literatures.

China Vitae
China Vitae is a resource of information for more than 2500 current Chinese political, military, economic, business and academic leaders. The extensively cross-referenced biographical database is designed to be an indispensable research tool for those who closely follow activities in China.

Prof. Sanjay Joshi’s website
A historian, Prof. Sanjay Joshi at Northern Arizona University includes links to India-related research sites, libraries, and world-wide primary sources collections on South Asian history.

South and Southeast Asia Video Archive -- University of Wisconsin-Madison Digital Asia Library
Provides a searchable catalog for video, television and cinema related to South and Southeast Asia. The majority of the materials is produced by Asians and therefore often offers a different perspective than materials produced in the West.

Chinese Movie Database
This site has three versions, in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and English, covering production, cast and crew, awards and biographies, reviews and books, and many other information of Chinese language movies made in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other regions.

Newspapers
China Daily People"s Daily

Both ontains news with coverage on the economy, science and technology, local and international politics, and serves to clarify the principles and policies of the Chinese government. Published in China, text is in both Chinese and English.

World Journal
Covers news in North America, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. Published in North America, text is in both Chinese and English.

Searching for Books

To find books within Mount Holyoke's collection, it's best to search the Five College Online Library Catalog by subject, author, title or keyword.

Searching by subject
When searching the library catalog, pay attention to subject headings assigned to relevant titles. Refining your search using the same subject heading terminology may yield more precise results.

The following are examples of subject headings in relating to Asian women:

Browsing the shelf by call number works best after having already identified a specific title. Relevant titles fall throughout our collection, but the DS call number section houses a sizeable amount of material:
