  • AskART Free biographical summaries of more than 27,000 North American artists.
  • Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography
    N 7565.E53 1998 Ref.
    A very useful source for researching themes in art. It provides clear and concise analysis with references at the end of each entry
  • Grove Art Online 
     An encyclopedic source for information on artists, famous works, artistic movements, and stylistic periods.  Articles contain bibliographies. Also available in a print edition at N 31 D5 1986 Ref.The electronic database contains the full text of the print articles, as well as additions and revisions.  The print volumes and the electronic database contain different visual images.
Searching for Books

Art History materials are generally found in the N classification, photography in TR. You may search for books using the Five College Online Library Catalog by author, title, subject or keyword.

Bibliographies and Indexes
  • Art Index (1984 - present)
    Provides citations to articles and book reviews in periodicals, yearbooks and museum bulletins published primarily in the U.S. and Europe. Covers archaeology, architecture, city planning, crafts, landscape architecture, film, fine arts, folk art, graphic arts, industrial design, interior design, and photography. 
  • Art Index Retrospective (1929-1984)
    Similar in scope to the title above, providing coverage back to 1929. Access Instructions: After clicking on the link above, the WilsonWeb page should appear. Click the checkbox next toArt Index Retrospective and then click either the Search or SearchPlus buttons on the upper right side of the screen. Journals indexed.
  • Academic Search Premier
    Large scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for more than 3,600 scholarly publications, including more than 2,700 peer-reviewed publications.
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science)(1975 - present)
    Indexes over 1,140 arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. Special feature: "cited reference" search for publications that have cited a known author or work. Updated weekly.
  • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals (1930-present)
    Indexes more than 2,000 periodicals published worldwide on archaeology, city planning, interior
    design, and historic preservation, as well as architecture.
  • Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) (1990-present)
    Provides access to the literature on Western visual art from over 3,000 periodicals, books, catalogs, dissertations, festschriften, essays and conference publications written in English as well as other European languages. For publications from 1975-1989, consult RILA (description below).
  • International Repertory of the Literature of Art (RILA) (1975-1989
    Main Library Z5937 .R16
    Coverage similar to BHA, for publication dates 1975-1989.
  • Perseus
    A multimedia interactive database designed to facilitate the study of archaic and classical Greece and to expand the ways in which ancient Greek literature, history, art, and archaeology can be examined. Contains an extensive archaeological catalog with about 25,000 accompanying images.
  • PCI
    An electronic index to periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues to 1990/1991. Covers many journals dating back to the early 1800's.

  • AccuNet/Associated Press Image Archive: current, international news images. The AccuNet/AP Image Archive is an electronic library containing The AP's photo reports and a selection of photos from their 50 million image print and negative library--updated daily. Be sure to check out the FAQ's section for more content detail, technical tips, and copyright limitations.
  • ARTStor: (Including AMICO and Archivision collections) A repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data. The Charter Collection documents artistic traditions across many times and cultures and embraces architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design as well as many other forms of visual culture.
  • Cities and Buildings Database: collection of digitized images of buildings and cities drawn from across time and throughout the world, available to students, researchers and educators on the web
  • Grove Dictionary of Art: click on Bridgeman to access the Bridgeman Art Library's database of images
  • WebMuseum
    Reproductions of selected paintings by hundreds of artists. Searchable by artist name. Also includes brief descriptions of themes and movements in art history.
